Background

Brill Scholarly Editions has been designed as a reading environment for text editions in the broadest sense of the word: critical editions, facsimiles, translations, and commentaries.

In 2019, Brill took on the challenge to build a platform that would enable scholars to search and browse through important classical texts and read them in a user-friendly way. Brill’s ambition was to achieve this with Open Source software; the Scaife Viewer – named after digital classicist Ross Scaife – was developed in 2018 for the renewed Perseus Digital Library, and proved to be very suitable for Brill’s purposes. In 2020, Brill flagships Supplementum Epigraphicum Graecum and Jacoby Online were added to the platform. Thanks to the migration to Brill Scholarly Editions, these complex publications now offer enhanced search options and multiple tools for reading and research.

A selection of filters, tailor-made per publication, were introduced to facilitate specific search options in each text.
